Company Overview:

M&M Recycling is a leading scrap metal recycling facility dedicated to processing ferrous and non-ferrous metals. We are looking for a skilled and experienced Diesel/Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our dynamic team. This role requires hands-on experience in maintaining and repairing heavy machinery used in the scrap metal and recycling industry.

Job Summary:

As a Diesel/Heavy Equipment Mechanic, you will be responsible for the troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance of a variety of heavy equipment and machinery used in the recycling process. You will also be expected to collaborate with other mechanics, yard managers, and personnel. Your role is vital to ensuring our equipment operates efficiently, minimizing downtime, and keeping operations running smoothly. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in maintaining and repairing heavy machinery, specifically in scrap yards or similar environments.

Key Responsibilities:

• Heavy Equipment Maintenance & Repairs:
  • Perform routine maintenance and emergency repairs on a variety of equipment including, but not limited to, forklifts, hydraulic excavators, mobile cranes, balers, shredders, conveyors, and other machinery used in scrap metal processing.
  • Inspect, diagnose, and troubleshoot mechanical issues on all machinery and equipment.
  • Maintain proper fluid levels, change oils, replace filters, and carry out general upkeep of machines.
• Electrical and Hydraulic Systems:
  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical systems, including wiring, motors, and control panels.
  • Diagnose and fix issues with hydraulic systems, including pumps, cylinders, hoses, and motors.
  • Repair and calibrate sensors and control systems.
• Fabrication and Welding:
  • Perform welding and fabrication tasks for repairs or modifications to equipment.
  • Build and modify parts or machinery as needed to keep operations running smoothly.
• Safety Compliance:
  • Ensure all work is done in accordance with safety protocols and OSHA regulations.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Follow lockout/tagout procedures when working on machinery.
• Preventive Maintenance & Documentation:
  • Schedule and perform regular preventive maintenance checks on all equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repair activities.
  • Report any issues or concerns to management regarding equipment performance and safety.
• Collaboration and Communication:
  • Work closely with the Yard Supervisor, Mechanics and other team members to ensure equipment is functioning properly and downtime is minimized.
  • Provide recommendations for equipment upgrades or replacements when necessary.

Qualifications:

• Experience:
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of hands-on experience in the maintenance and repair of heavy machinery, preferably in a scrap metal, recycling, or industrial setting.
  • Proven experience with ferrous and non-ferrous processing equipment such as shredders, balers, cranes, hydraulic excavators, and conveyors.
• Skills:
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Proficiency in welding (MIG, TIG, Stick), fabrication, and metalworking.
  • Familiarity with electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and blueprints.
• Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly and work in physically demanding environments.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to operate and repair machinery and power tools safely.
• Certifications:
  • Welding certification or equivalent preferred.
  • Forklift operation certification and knowledge of OSHA safety standards is a plus.
• Soft Skills:
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills to work with a variety of teams.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-energy environment.
