A motivated, detail-oriented, and proactive individual is sought to join a dynamic team as a Legal Secretary in the Housing, Consumer & Public Benefits Unit. This full-time position offers a unique opportunity to support multiple attorneys with a variety of legal tasks, providing essential assistance in the delivery of services to clients.
About the Role:
This position plays a crucial role in providing secretarial support to staff attorneys, assisting with the preparation of legal documents, managing correspondence, and maintaining client records. It involves working in a collaborative environment where attention to detail, professionalism, and initiative are key.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide essential secretarial support, including the preparation of legal documents and correspondence, and ensure their accuracy through proofreading.
Utilize MS Word, databases, and an electronic case management system to efficiently handle tasks.
Manage filing, mail distribution, and phone duties, ensuring that legal files and client records are maintained properly.
File legal papers/pleadings at courthouses or via e-filing, assist with scheduling hearings, and interact with court staff and opposing parties.
Conduct client interviews, both in-person and over the phone, ensuring confidentiality and professionalism.
If applicable, assist with translation services for clients.
Monitor and maintain case statuses using the electronic case management system.
Maintain logs for phone calls, visitors, and intake schedules.
Provide backup support for other office staff as needed.
Uphold confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions with clients, colleagues, and external contacts.
Take on any additional duties as requested by supervisors.
Qualifications:
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
Fluent in Spanish (both verbal and written) is required.
Prior experience in a law office, particularly in a secretarial or support role, is preferred.
Experience in bankruptcy or tax law is a plus.
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Proficient with Microsoft Office products and case management software.
Ability to work independently, exercising sound judgment and discretion.
Ability to travel occasionally for work-related purposes.
A strong attendance record is required.
Salary:
The starting salary for this position is $35,640 per year, with the potential for a higher salary based on the applicant's experience.
