Job Description and Duties
The Fire Chief will be directed by the Chief of Police Services in the Fire Department at the Department of State Hospitals - Atascadero (ASH). The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties, but not limited to:
• Responsible for organizing, planning, directing, and implementing fire and life safety prevention programs for facility staff.
• Train and direct fire personnel in suppression and emergency medical services to prevent or minimize the loss of life, property, and environment.
• Make budget recommendations reflecting the need for fire protection and safety of the facility.
• Attends and participates in various Hospital committees as required by the facility.
• May serve as a liaison and work in cooperative relationships with facility disciplines, licensing and accreditation surveyors, contractors, and other agencies including auto and mutual aid cooperatives for all fire service related matters.

Working Conditions
This position may require you to work within the Secured Treatment Area (STA).

California State Fire Fighter 1 certification
Possession of a valid California Driver’s License A, B, or C with fire fighter endorsement
Emergency Medical Technician certification
Education equivalent to 20 college semester units in fire science

Eligibility & Minimum Qualifications
In order to be considered for this job vacancy, you MUST satisfy one of the following requirements:
1. BE LIST ELIGIBLE: Successfully complete the competitive State civil service exam pertaining to this classification at Fire Chief Exam , OR
2. BE TRANSFER ELIGIBLE: Must meet the minimum qualifications of the classification per DPA Rule 250, have current employment with the State of California in the same classification with permanent or probationary status, or in a classification that is substantially the same with permanent or probationary status , OR 3. BE REINSTATEMENT ELIGIBLE: Have obtained previous permanent employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
Either I: Three years' experience performing fire-fighting duties in the California state service
OR
II: Four years' (or part-time equivalent) experience in urban or suburban fire fighting.
