Job Summary:

The Office of Compliance advances compliance with applicable laws and policies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. We collaborate with University partners to minimize compliance risk and promote ethical conduct throughout the University. Compliance is a shared responsibility, with every member of the University understanding their responsibilities and being accountable for their actions.

To address increased Title VI enforcement, new digital accessibility requirements under the Americans with Disabilities Act and other compliance requirements, the Office of Compliance is conducting a search for a Civil Rights and Compliance Investigator. This position plays a key role in this work and is part of a team of investigators reporting to the Assistant Director of Investigations. The position investigates complaints of violations of UW-Madison's civil rights policies and other conduct-related policies, including the policy on sexual harassment and sexual violence.

Responsibilities:

Independently investigates and assists in the resolution of complex, sensitive and high-profile discrimination complaints filed with the institution. Determines whether allegations meet institution criteria for filing a complaint of discrimination and works with additional legal bodies to identify and recommend outcomes.
  • 65% Completes legal investigations including interviews, document reviews, and report preparation and writing specific to complex, sensitive, and high-profile discrimination complaints filed with the Institution
  • 10% Assesses allegation criteria, reviews complaints, and communicates pertinent investigation activity and information to affiliated stakeholders
  • 10% Provides consultative services to affiliated entities regarding ongoing investigations
  • 5% Collaborates with various legal bodies to adhere to legal requests and negotiate resolutions
  • 10% Properly records all investigative progress and significant communications in relevant database(s)

Qualifications:

May 2025 law school graduates are encouraged to apply if they meet the minimum qualifications listed below.

A minimum of one year of professional experience investigating and resolving discrimination or employment complaints, with particular focus on complaints alleging sexual violence or sexual misconduct is required. Clerkships, internships, and clinical experience may be considered.

Experience in a higher education, governmental, or regulatory compliance setting strongly preferred.

This is primarily an on-site position based at Bascom Hall on the UW-Madison campus. Some limited flexibility for remote work may be available.
